Supporting students with more than just money:
Mentoring and networking with the Lampe Foundation
Sherbrooke- November 27, 2013: Understanding that financial aid is not the only thing students
need to succeed, the locally based Lampe Foundation, CFUW Sherbrooke & District teamed up
with the Champlain College Department of Nursing to offer students, from first year to
graduates, the opportunity to network and meet potential mentors. On Tuesday, November
26, men and woman who have received scholarships from the Lampe Foundation met with
members of the mentoring committee, teachers in the nursing program and practicing and
retired nurses from the community.
Navigating the transition from school to the work force can be a challenge, and mentoring and
support are integral to retaining the young people being educated in the Townships. Krystyna
Kouri, coordinator of the nursing program since its inception in only 2010, spoke about
mentoring as a partnership and the mentor as “tutor, guide, coach, and confidante.” The event
offered a chance for current students to hear from Carol Mooney some the amazing stories
only nurses can tell, helping them solidify their decisions to give back to our community by
serving as health care professionals.
The mentoring initiative to support students beyond simple financial aid was presented by
Wendy Durrant, chair of the Lampe Foundation’s mentoring committee, who described the
opportunities offered, while potential mentors spoke about their backgrounds and careers.
Mr. Rejean Plourde, the father of a student in the first class to graduate in nursing, commenced
the event with the presentation of a plaque he designed, created, and donated to show
gratitude and appreciation for the program, the only nursing program offered in English in the
Eastern Townships.
The Lampe Foundation, CFUW Sherbrooke & District is a non-profit organization dedicated to
providing education support for students from the Eastern Townships and across Canada. It is
